Let’s Stop the Esoteric BS and Become More Effective

Many discussions today include topics over which we have no control. How about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the price of gas, the stock market (how about that extra “zero” starting a downward spiral?) and is the big question—is the economy really in recovery?
How many of us who provide information, advice and solutions to personal and business challenges tend to become a bit esoteric and philosophical? Consider the definition of esoteric as understood by or meant for only the select few who have special knowledge or interest. And for all the others, it means just plain impractical or lacking application to the situation at hand.
My theme for 2010 is “It’s not about the economy, (adjective deleted); it’s about us!” There is growing confusion among business owners and executives and those who advise them regarding strategic versus tactical. Lack of an effective strategy may have created the current dilemma. However, clarity about what must be done right now, the day-to-day tactics, is critical.
Is it time for us to dust off some of the basic, time-tested principles like just becoming more effective? Rate yourself, on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being perfect, just how effective am I, my managers, sales team and everybody else in the company? Effectiveness is simply getting done what you set out to do, consistently. If not, why not?
Unless you are optimizing your effectiveness and those in key positions on your team, your strategy won’t matter. It matters where you want to get to and what is required to get there. Otherwise, you are like Alice in Wonderland when she came to the fork in the road and asked the Cheshire Cat which way she should go. You know the rest of the story. The cat told here it depends on where you want to go. Alice said, “I don’t know.” To which the cat replied, then it doesn’t matter which road you take.
I will conclude before I risk becoming a bit esoteric by asking one of my favorite coaching questions: “What is it you know to do; you are not doing, which when you do, you will accelerate your progress?”
