Are you on track to achieve your goals?

You may already be developing habit patterns that will propel you down the track toward your goals or they will become obstacles and barriers. None of us is immune to the distractions facing us each day that could take us off course. Here are three common habits that could make a difference:

1. Focusing on what is not working or what is wrong.
In a recent Effectiveness Connection™ I presented the NeFER principle of focusing on the positive results you are getting, not what you didn’t get.

Coaching Point: Regularly review “What’s going right?” or “What IS working?” Shift your way of thinking even when things are always going like you want them to. This will provide increased energy and clarity to move forward.

2. Undervaluing yourself.
Most of us tend to quickly forget what we have accomplished and overlook our strengths. Reviewing your strengths and resources is also part of the NeFER principle that will increase your awareness of what you do well and assets available to achieve your goals.

Coaching Point: Regularly ask yourself, “What do I have going for me?” Pay close attention to what you say to yourself and the comments others make. Always speak kindly about yourself and request that others do likewise. Refuse to process any negative input unless you have requested it from someone whose opinion you value. It is important to teach others who intend to be in your personal space how you want to be treated.

3. Dwelling on your fears.

How much energy are you wasting playing “what-if” mind games? Authorities say most fears never come
to pass. What a waste!

Coaching Point: Use the time-honored technique of asking “What is the worst thing that could happen?” Most issues are not likely to be life threatening. Examine your reading habits and be sure you are putting confidence-generating ideas into your mind regularly.

A final thought. When a real problem appears in your path, identify exactly what is wrong by asking, “What is the gap between what you intended and what you have?” Next, identify the cause and correct it. This could require wise counsel from a mentor or coach. You do have one, don’t you? Then, get back on track by taking the next step toward achieving your inspiring goals.

Enthusiastically,

Bob
