In chapter 5, page 99 and chapter 6, page 131 of my book, Turning Good People Into Top Talent, (Fourth Edition, 2007), I illustrate the Cycle of Mastery™ concept. The first reference relates to creating a culture of continuous learning and emphasizes that learning must be continuous in order to master the skills of the job.  The second reference relates to a concept I call Coach-based Management™ where the manager gets involved with the learner in achieving mastery.

Here are the six levels of mastery integrated with the four phases in the Cycle of Mastery™.

Level 1.  Unaware:  Unable to recognize limitations

Level 2.  Understanding:  May be able to answer general questions on the subject but has  not demonstrated ability to apply the knowledge without supervision.

Level 2 is accomplished in the first phase of the Cycle of Mastery™, Awareness.

Level 3.  Supported Competency:  Able to make application with support and guidance.

At this level of mastery, the individual is in phase two of the cycle, Discovery, and can make relevant connections between the learning and the requirements of the job.

Level 4.  Independent Competency:  Able to apply knowledge/skill without support.

The individual is now in the third phase of the cycle, Application and can begin to utilize the learning to consistently achieve higher levels of performance.  This will lead to level 5.

Level 5.  Recognized Strength:  Able to act as a guide and support others.

After achieving level 5, it is essential that the learning be directed to one or more reasons the job exists.  This is phase four which I refer to as Accountabilities, the measurable evidence the job is being done for the right reasons.  This completes one revolution of the Cycle of Mastery™. However, continuous learning and development through additional cycles is required to achieve and maintain Level 6, Mastery:  recognized as a specialist of one of the indicators or top talent.

Only top talent matched to the job has the capacity to achieve and consistently perform at Level 6.  What processes do you have in place to take your key people to level 6?  Ask me about the resources available to assess personal skills mastery levels, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
