What’s In Your Tool Box?

Do you have a tool box in your garage or a tool drawer in the kitchen? Where do you go when you need to make a repair or begin a home improvement project? You have probably discovered that having the right tool makes the job much easier and quicker. How often have purchased a tool because it could come in handy someday?

Consider your professional or business life. What tools do you have in your tool box? Last week I mentioned examining your behavior and motivators and the use of learning assessments to enhance professional and team effectiveness. Individuals and organization that subscribe to best-practices are in a constant state of improvement. What do you suppose is in their tool boxes?

The Wall Street Journal reported this week on the signs of the coming economic recovery. One indicator mentioned is the increased activity among home owners engaged in improvement projects. A national home improvement center actually reported a 23% increase in net revenue.

Consider the tools you may need for these categories of professional and business improvement: Time Mastery, Stress Management, Communication Effectiveness, Self Management, Interpersonal Relations, Leadership, Team Effectiveness, Sales and Customer Service. Before you run out and load up your shopping cart, consider the results you want to achieve, the priority results for this quarter and for the year.

When you know what you most want to accomplish, determine what is getting in the way, what must be done better or differently to make it happen. Then, make your shopping list and head off to gather some tools.
