Socrates was on trial for heresy because he encouraged his students to challenge the accepted beliefs of the time and think for themselves when he said, "The unexamined life is not worth living."  This became his death sentence, even though he could have chosen life in prison or exile.  He believed without his "examined life", there was no point in living.  Fortunately, our choices are not that severe.
What parts of your life need examining?   How about your behavior, your values, your motivations, your levels of engagement in your work and your level of contribution in the community?  What technical skills do you need to master to become more effective professionally or on your job?   What Essential Skills do you need to master to get to the next level, such as communication, interpersonal relations and time management?
Here are five questions to ask yourself and find answers:
1. What is my operating style, the strengths and limitations?
2. What are my values and motivators, the reason behind my choices?
3. What is my Emotional Quotient, my EQ?
4. What are my work expectations, what needs to happen at work to make a stronger contribution and achieve the accountabilities of my job?
5. What are the capacities or competencies required by my job, role or position?
Today, there are assessments that provide insight into these areas and you can find answers to these questions.   If you are really up to something important, it will be easier and less difficult to have a guide.  Engage the services of a coach or attract a mentor to provide guidance or join a mastermind team to be your sounding board.  Achieving mastery is a journey requiring continuous improvement.  Why go it alone?

Enthusiastically,

Bob
