This week, The Wall Street Journal mentioned a company being acquired by another—a giant in their industry. They intend to dominate their market. The website of the acquired company revealed their mission statement: “To restore (name of company) to its position as market leader—not by re-creating the past, but by embracing the future.” [Sounds like they may have lost their way.]
Their Vision [of what they intend to become]
“We will:
-
Be highly responsive to customer needs and issues.
-
Deliver a more reliable, more fuel efficient, more innovative, and more cost-effective (primary product). [More! How about better?]
-
Make money, enabling a return on investment and business reinvestment. [Suppose they haven’t been?]
-
Grow, through identifying new ways to better serve our customers.” [what an idea] The words inside brackets are mine.
These are Jack Welch’s definition of a winning company: Growth, Innovation and Responsiveness.
The following are four key practices of companies that prosper in good times and difficult times:
- Understand what their customers want and need.
- Do the right things to consistently exceed their customers’ expectations.
- Focus on the most important things to achieve these expectations
- .Incorporate these practices into a well defined strategy.
How do you think these compare to the first list? For sure, each of them requires top talent— mediocre people will simply not get it done.
Here is how top companies are turning their good people into top talent . . .
51% use leadership development tools.
50% position succession planning as a key retention strategy.
34 % offer executive coaching.
28% offer external leadership development programs.
23% offer mentorship programs.
Where do you and your company stand when it comes to turning good people into top talent?
Consider the following elements of the Effectiveness TEAM™ process:
T - Talent Matched to Job: Getting the right players in the right positions on your team.
E - Engaged and Empowered: Optimizing productivity and fulfillment.
A - Aligned and Accountable: Getting everyone on the same page and same direction.
M - Mastering Essential Skills: Maximizing manager and worker effectiveness.
With signs of a recovery on the horizon, now is the time to prepare your team to out-perform the competition.
Imagine the positive impact on your bottom line with a fully engaged team of top talent executing your strategy everyday.
Enthusiastically,
Bob
