Strategic Renewal: The Real Answer to the Recovery

The Wall Street Journal recently reported information received since the Federal Open Market Committee met in November suggests that economic activity has continued to pick up and that the deterioration in the labor market is abating.  However, there is continued reluctance by (big) businesses to begin hiring.

Two issues here are noteworthy.  First, employment growth has always occurred from the small business sector (which the Labor Department calls up to 500 employees).  Secondly, many businesses report increases in productivity even with their downsizing.  Clearly, these businesses are simply becoming more efficient and making better use of the remaining talent-a clear message to workers and management-that you can turn good people into top talent (a message for another day).

What is the real solution to the decline of your business?  I am discovering that many companies have simply over-run their strategy.

I recently met with senior management of a privately held company which had doubled sales during a recent three-year period of its 20+ years in business.  However, sales this year will be about half of that.  Plot that on a growth chart (the classic "S" curve), which the sales manager did in this case and you discover a major spike that was not sustainable.  Could it have been sustainable had the economy remained strong?  I doubt it because the company had not put in place a structure or designed a strategy to develop and manage that growth.

Are you ready to grow and build or rebuild a winning company?  Stop waiting for a "Recovery" - whatever that is.  Good chance we would not even recognize it among the continued mixed signals.  Now is the time to seize market share by immediately beginning an organizational transformation, a strategic renewal process.

Enthusiastically,

Bob
